Taylor Swift’s 12th studio album, The Life of a Showgirl, came out at 12 a.m. ET on October 3rd. It consists of 12 tracks, one of which features her fellow pop queen, Sabrina Carpenter.
The whole vibe of the album was meant to be a mix of pop and soft rock. A majority of fans have also said that the album has one song that fits every one of Swift’s other albums, making it so no two songs sound the same.
Taylor combined the hard lyrics of Reputation and The Tortured Poets Department with the sound of the albums 1989 and Lover, and she did it perfectly.
The lyrics, though basic, are fun and creative but also heartfelt. One of my favorite lyrics is, “I’ve been afflicted with a terminal uniqueness.” This is from the song “Eldest Daughter,” which explores the problems the oldest daughter, or the oldest child in general, faces in their lifetime due to being the firstborn.
Due to the basic lyrics, it received backlash on social media. However, it still got a very positive response on its release day. Many fans, including myself, stayed up until midnight to be among the first people to hear it.
The album’s success has been record-breaking. Before it was even released, it had broken the record of the most pre-saves on Spotify, gathering over 5 million pre-saves. Within the first week, it broke Adele’s previous record for the biggest first-week album sales in the modern music era.
There are already rumors floating around that The Life of a Showgirl could win album of the year, which would be well deserved.
Overall, I love The Life of a Showgirl. It’s a very fun and unique album, with things we haven’t heard from Taylor before. It’s the perfect album for many occasions, and I highly recommend it to Swifties and non-Swifties.
