The Hershey Trojans lost to the Lower Dauphin Falcons 17-1 during their Varsity Baseball game at Memorial Field on Tuesday, April 21. The game was cut short by a mercy rule after the fourth inning.
“It was probably one of the worst losses I’ve ever been a part of,” said Jeff Gergic, head coach of the Hershey Trojans Baseball team.
The Falcons opened the scoring with nine runs between the first two innings. They scored even more runs as the game progressed, driving home one run in the third inning and another seven in the fourth inning. With this defeat, the Falcons have now outscored the Trojans 28-1 in just two meetings this season.
“We just have to get back at it,” said Gergic. “It’s over, there’s nothing we could do, and we’ve got to reset and move on. We’ll get back to practice tomorrow and be ready to go Thursday.”
The Trojans were met with a strong lineup of players from the Falcons, including pitcher Max Hoopes, who went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in three runs. Joined by Hoopes were Gavin Westervery, Nate McKelvie, and Rylan Ulrich, who each scored two runs.
Despite facing extreme pressure on the field, pitcher Colton Fultz remained disciplined while up on the mound.
“I just went pitch by pitch,” Fultz said, “and tried to make the next one a good one.”
The Trojans’ overall record for the season sits at 2-11, with a 2-7 mark in conference play, and have fallen from sixth to seventh place in the Mid-Penn Keystone Conference standings, just behind the Central Dauphin East Panthers. While the Panthers share the same conference score as the Trojans, their overall score sits higher at 5-7.
The Trojans’ matchup against the Panthers will be at Memorial Field on Thursday, April 23, at 4:15 p.m. The game is free and open to the public.
