The new Wicked movie takes you on a whimsical adventure that leaves you wanting more. This movie came out in November of 2024, directed by Jon M. Chu, starring Ariana Grande as Glinda and Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba. I came into this movie with high expectations, and I left very pleased.
The chemistry between Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo is undeniable. When you are watching this movie, you can see the love they have for each other and the musical itself. I loved how Jon M. Chu told the story of Wicked as if you were a part of the movie. All of the twists and turns in this movie keep you on your toes, which I loved. I was concerned with how long the duration of the movie was going into it because I always find myself getting bored during long movies. I was so surprised when the movie was done, and I thought, “That’s it?”
Of course, the songs and musical aspects of this movie were outstanding. The singing was exceptional, and the choreography was one of the best I’ve seen in movies like these. What I appreciated about the songs was it never felt like a song was unnecessary. Sometimes, when I watch musicals, I ask myself why they even sing about this. But during Wicked, I felt like every song was so important and had a big impact on the plot of the movie.
I will say that it can be confusing if you don’t understand the Wicked storyline. I came into this movie blind, just excited to see what everyone is talking about, and I wish I had done some research on what Wicked was about. By the end of the production, I understood what was going on, but I definitely would have enjoyed the film more if I watched a review or had more knowledge of the plot line.
As someone who isn’t familiar with musicals or the story of Wicked, I still definitely recommend this movie to anyone and everyone. It’s perfect to watch with family, friends, or yourself. Even if you aren’t a fan of musicals, this is a must-watch movie. Not only is everyone so musically talented, but they are also perfectly comedic. I found myself laughing at their silly remarks throughout the movie, the kookiness of Elphaba’s character, and Glinda’s flamboyant personality. Wicked is truly a heartwarming movie that I think everyone needs to experience.
Wicked is still in theaters today. There are showtimes at Flagship Cinema, which you can purchase on Fandango and some streaming platforms. These include Apple TV, Amazon Prime Video, YouTube TV, Fandango at Home, and Google Play Movie. All of these cost $19.99 to watch.
