Penn State was unable to advance to the College Football Finals after losing 27-24 in the final moments of their game against Notre Dame. Penn State was tied 24-24 before Notre Dame kicker, Mitch Jeter hit a 41 yard field goal with seven seconds left in the game.
This loss comes after a strong showing from Penn State in the new expanded playoffs. The team respectively defeated Southern Methodist University 38-10 and Boise State 31-14.
Leaders of Penn State were quarterback Drew Allar with 135 passing yards, junior running back Nick Singleton with three touchdowns and 84 rushing yards, and Tyler Warren with 75 receiving yards.
Penn State looked strong in the first half, leading 10-3 before halftime. The team earned their points from a 20-yard field goal from Ryan Barker and a five-yard touchdown from Singleton.
The game was tied after the third quarter when Notre Dame hit a 41-yard field goal and a three-yard touchdown from quarterback Riley Leonard.
The fourth quarter was stressful for both teams as both teams scored two touchdowns each before Notre Dame scored the winning field goal.
