On May 12, 2026, the Hershey Girls Varsity Softball team earned a commanding 11–1 victory over Palmyra at Hershey High School. Led by an outstanding performance from Maddie Bowe — who pitched without allowing an earned run and also hit a home run — the Trojans controlled the game from start to finish.
Interview with Coach Matt Kaag
Eshleman: Coach Kaag, congratulations on the big win over Palmyra. What stood out to you most about the team’s performance?
Coach Matt Kaag: Thank you. I thought our team played a really complete game. We were strong defensively, aggressive at the plate, and our energy stayed high throughout all seven innings. That’s the kind of softball we want to play consistently.
Eshleman: Maddie Bowe had an incredible game both pitching and hitting. What can you say about her performance?
Coach Kaag: Maddie was outstanding. She stayed composed in the circle, attacked hitters, and kept them off balance all game long. Then to contribute offensively with a home run — that’s huge. She’s a competitor and a great leader for this team.
Eshleman: Offensively, the team scored 11 runs. What was working so well at the plate?
Coach Kaag: We did a great job making adjustments and staying disciplined. The girls were patient early in counts and then attacked pitches they could drive. We also did a nice job moving runners and capitalizing on opportunities.
Eshleman: How important was this win for the team as the season continues?
Coach Kaag: Every win matters, especially against a solid program like Palmyra. More importantly, it builds confidence and shows the girls what they’re capable of when they play together and stay focused.
Eshleman: What message did you give the team after the game?
Coach Kaag: I told them to enjoy the win but stay hungry. We’re continuing to improve, but there’s still work to do. The goal is to keep building momentum heading into the toughest part of the season.
Eshleman: Finally, what makes this Hershey team special?
Coach Kaag: Their chemistry. They support each other, they work hard, and they genuinely care about the success of the team. That kind of culture makes coaching really rewarding.
The Trojans’ dominant victory over Palmyra showcased both talent and teamwork, with standout performances across the field. With players like Maddie Bowe leading the way and strong guidance from Coach Matt Kaag, Hershey softball continues to build momentum this season.
