Weekly Batch of Bach Episode 3: Backstreet’s Back

Shanna Sweitzer and Madi Held

Every week, Madi Held and Shanna Sweitzer are giving you a weekly review of ABC’s The Bachelor.

Hosted by Chris Harrison, this show aires on Monday nights at 8 p.m. on ABC and is about a single man looking for a woman with whom he would like to spend the rest of his life. After extensive interviews and auditions, 30 women were picked to be on the show this season. In each episode, there are group dates and one-on-one dates where the bachelor gets to spend time with the contestants. At the end of every week, there is a rose ceremony where the bachelor narrows down his choices by giving roses to the girls he wants to stay another week. Those who do not receive a rose are then “sent home” from the show. This helps him to then focus on the girls that he thinks will be the best for him. At the end, the bachelor must decide between the two remaining girls which one he’d like to propose to. Many couples end up breaking off their engagement and splitting up, but there has also been a lot of successful couples that do get married and even have children. The show has become popular all throughout America, and on January 2, 2017, the 21st season started with Nick Viall as America’s Bachelor.

Continued from last week…

Last week’s episode was cut off before the rose ceremony and before Nick was about to tell the other girls about his past relationship with Liz (whom he had just sent home). Most of the the girls were not very happy with the news. But during the cocktail party before the ceremony, some of them were actually grateful. Danielle L. thanked Nick for his honesty during their conversation which made Nick feel confident in his decision to tell everyone. On the other hand, Corinne was a little mad. Like always, she wanted to outdo everyone else, but she took it a little too far and ended up embarrassed, which was honestly really funny. At the rose ceremony, the following girls stayed: Astrid, Taylor, Whitney, Kristina, Danielle L., Rachel, Vanessa, Raven, Jaimi, Dominique, Sarah, Alexis, Courtney, Josephine, Jasmine, Corinne, Danielle M., Brittany, and Kristen. Corinne, being the way she is, slept through the rose ceremony. Even though she already had a rose, it was so disrespectful for her to do this. It concerned Nick because he doesn’t want to encourage that kind of behavior on the show.

Danielle L., Christen, Kristina, Whitney, Taylor, Jasmine, and Corinne joined Nick and the singing sensation, the Backstreet Boys, on this crazy group date. The girls rehearsed dance numbers that they later had to perform on stage with the band during one of their concerts. The girl who the Backstreet Boys thought did best would be serenaded on stage with Nick. All the pressure was on Jasmine who is a pro basketball dancer. It was down to her and Danielle who really delivered and did an amazing job. The boys ended up choosing Danielle and they performed one of their hit songs “I Want It That Way.”

After the show, the girls had time to have some one-on-one conversations with Nick. Eventually, he gave Danielle L. the rose on group date 1.

One-on-one date

Madi

This week, Nick had an out of this world experience with Vanessa on their one-on-one date.

The two literally they felt like they were “out of the world” since the first part of the date took place on an airplane to experience what zero gravity (basically space) was like. Once the airplane was in the air, they were free to move within the space on the plane provided. Both Vanessa and Nick goofed around the entire time doing push-ups, dancing, and just trying to stay afloat. They were having fun until Vanessa started to get nauseous. She threw up a few times but Nick managed to stay right by her side while comforting her and rubbing her back through it all.

After landing, the couple had a dinner and conversation to bring the day to an end. They talked for awhile and Vanessa asked Nick what we all want to know, “Why do this [show] again, for the third time?” This turned into a deep conversation for the two of them bringing them closer and even making Nick get emotional enough to cry. This added an extra bond between the two making it an easy decision for Nick to offer Vanessa the rose, which she happily accepted.

Group date 2

Olympic gold medalists Carl Lewis (middle), Allyson Felix, and Michelle Carter joined Nick and the girls on this sporty group date. The girls were put to the challenge when they competed in track and field events like long jump, javelin, shot put, and the 100M dash to win extra time with Nick. (ABC/Rick Rowell)

Group date number 2 consisted of Rachel, Alexis, Astrid, Jaimi, Sarah, Brittany, and Dominique. The location of the date was what looked like a high school track and field. The girls not only met Nick there but also Olympic gold medalists Michelle Carter, Carl Lewis, and Allyson Felix. On this date, the girls would be competing in a “Nickatholon” in attempt to win over Nick’s heart. The girl’s competed against each other in long jump, javelin, and shot put. The girls with the top 3 scores, Astrid, Alexis, and Rachel then competed in the hounded meter dash. Once across the finish line, the goal was to grab the big ring placed on a stand and bring it to Nick who was sitting in a hot tub around the corner. Rachel passed the finish line with Alexis following closely behind her. Rachel grabbed the ring, but she didn’t get a good enough grip so it feel on the floor. Rachel then quickly ran back to get the ring off the ground. As soon as Rachel did so, Astrid had crossed the line and tried to reach down to snatch up the fallen ring, but Rachel accidently smashed it leaving half still together and half shattered to pieces. Therefore, Astrid picked up the bigger half and ran around the corner to Nick. Since she was the winner, she jumped in the hot tub for her alone time with Nick. They then later had a cocktail type of hour so that each person could get a chance to talk to Nick. The person who had the most intense talk with him was Dominique. She confronted Nick about feeling left out and that she didn’t want to waste her time. Nick then told her that he saw no future with her and sent her home. Following that, Rachel was handed the rose of the date from Nick and she was left feeling overjoyed.

The Pool Party

Shanna

Instead of the traditional cocktail party before the rose ceremony, this week there was a pool party. The pressure on Nick and the girls would be eased, as they could just relax and have some fun. Of course Corinne had a different idea. She decided to again act inappropriately alone with Nick, prompting the other girls to question his intentions. They don’t want to be part of it if he’s not serious about his relationships with everyone. Corinne is extremely immature, and she is definitely not ready to be a fiance at the end of the show. She even complained about having to take care of herself because that is what her “nanny” at home was for. Corinne doesn’t even do her own laundry or make her own food. Many of the girls mentioned Corinne’s lack of maturity to Nick during the pool party, especially Vanessa. She called Nick out for being inappropriate with Corinne and said that she’s not willing to stay if Corinne is the kind of girl he’s interested in. She doesn’t think he’s taking it seriously.

Then the episode ended.

How’s Nick Doing?

Madi

Nick has been making clear decisions and not letting anything stop this. We see that he isn’t afraid to send people home and get it out of the way since he recently sent Liz and Dominique home before the rose ceremony even happened. Although all the other girls are starting to judge him since he condones that way Corinne acts, Nick remains to stay true to his decisions. We won’t really be able to tell until next week if all the girl’s explaining their feelings about Corinne will open his eyes and make him realize that what he is doing is wrong. He could also do absolutely nothing about it, but we will see the results in episode 4. On the other hand, Nick is showing emotions, specifically when he started crying while talking to Vanessa, which is a plus and shows his dedication. This show, he is forming great connections with the girls and hopefully this is helping him to narrow down his decisions.
