TV Show Review: Wednesday

Arianna Lila, Reporter

In Netflix’s newest original “Wednesday,” the original Addams family movie is given its very own twist. It is written by Charles Addams, Miles Millar, and Alfred Gough. The first episode was aired on November 23rd, 2022. The show has a star studded cast including Jenna Ortega, Catherine Zeta-Jones, Luis Guzmán, Christina Ricci, and many others.

The television show takes place at Nevermore Academy in Jericho, Vermont with the Shapeshifting Principal Weems. The show begins when Wednesday gets expelled from one of the 8 schools she has been to in the past 5 years. She is introduced to what she thinks is known as the dreadful Nevermore Boarding School for outcasts. The writers did a great job introducing Nevermore to Wednesday to frighten her. The 15-year-old girl feels like she is being tied too close to her mother and father, since it was the school they went to in the past.

Wednesday is portrayed very similarly to the original Addams Family with her cold heart. She starts off her relationship with the principal with a few bumps in the road due to her personality. As time went on, they began to connect more while Wednesday was adjusting to her new school. Wednesday met many people and even though it was hard for her to say the word “friend,” she knew people were always there to look out for her. She was able to develop a very good relationship with her werewolf roommate Enid Sinclair played by Emma Myers.

She went on various adventures to find out the truth about her town. Towards the beginning of the show, she was shown a picture that another character known as Rowan, played by Calum Ross, pulled out of his pocket after attempting to harm the girl. This affected Wednesday throughout the whole show and is the reason for her adventures. Her depressing personality unfortunately frightened people and made her have a harder time getting information about the town. She can be difficult to see through, but once people bond with her they understand that she is a good person at heart.

Many people thought Wednesday was luring them into helping her, but little did they know that they were all a part of the “puzzle.” What seems to come off as a black hearted soul to others is what made Wednesday not give up on her journey. Although she faced many frightening events, she only got stronger and a lot more curious about the part she plays in the town.

The sheriff of Jericho (Jamie McShane) and his son Tyler Galpin (Hunter Dothan) both had large roles in the show. Tylers interest in Wednesday allowed the 15-year-old to get closer to the final part of her interest in the town. She had a close connection with Sheriff Donovan Galpin and the Mayor (Tommie Earl Jenikins) and their investigation of the town. She followed people, stalked them, and made charts/boards of what was going on. She couldn’t settle with only knowing part of the story. The writers showed each scene very well of her finding out the truth when it came to setting, sound, and overall the whole show.

She came off a bit selfish and even admitted to it. Her dark personality caused her to get hurt in some ways, but it also saved her from experiencing pain in forms she has not dealt with before. There were so many plot twists, and viewers were left with some confusion; however, the writers answered many questions throughout the show. The relationships that Wednesday had with other characters such as Xavier (Percy Hynes White), Tyler Galpin (Hunter Dothan), Principal Weems (Gwendolyn’s Christle), and many others were very chaotic and kind of hard to follow along with.

The new “Wednesday” had a great plot. The cast is full of people that portrayed their characters accurately. It was well thought through and captured many moments that nobody would have expected. Although many people are not a fan of depressing movies and shows, the TV show was so intriguing and made many viewers want to see another season.
