From Harley Quinn to Deadpool and Doctor Strange to Batman, 2016 featured some of the greatest successes and failures of the superhero genre’s history.

This year had six superhero movies, two from every major superhero universe. Fox, Warner Bros., and Disney all took big risks in their movies in 2016. Some paid off, and others didn’t. Four of the movies (Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War, X-Men; Apocalypse, and Batman v. Superman; Dawn of Justice) are currently available for purchase. Suicide Squad will be available soon, and Doctor Strange is currently in theaters.

Here are the record-breaking six superhero movies of 2016 based on the quality of the movie. Batman v. Superman, the Ultimate Edition will be used since it is much more detailed than the original edition.

Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn in Suicide Squad (Warner Bros).

Suicide Squad

What it was about: Suicide Squad is about a group of super villains who are united as part of a plan by the government to create a team of villains to use against other threats.

Overall review: Although it was one of the most anticipated movies of the summer, Suicide Squad didn’t live up to the hype. The film received a mere 26% rating from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and a 66% rating from the fans.

Why it is ranked here: One of the largest complaints was the misuse of key characters. Slipknot was advertised as a key character of the Squad, but he was killed minutes after he debuted. The Joker was thought to be a key antagonist for the Squad, but he had far less screen time than he was supposed to. Another reason the movie is ranked here is that the PG-13 rating made it too light-hearted than it should’ve been. The film was said to be the story of several sick and twisted villains put together to stop other sick and twisted villains, while things like Captain Boomerang’s dialogue made it more comedic. An R-rating would’ve given DC the opportunity to make The Joker and Harley Quinn as psychopathic as they are in the comics.

Oscar Isaac as Apocalypse in X-Men Apocalypse (FOX).

X-Men Apocalypse

What it was about: This movie takes place in 1983 and in the movie, En Sabah Nur (Apocalypse), the oldest and most powerful of all mutants, is awoken from his sleep thousands of years after he was last awake (he is from Ancient Egypt). After he threatens mankind, the X-men are forced to get involved.

Overall review: Rotten Tomatoes gave the movie a 48%, which is lower than most of the other film in the franchise. But like so many other films, there was a large gap between the fan and critic rating. Similar to the Star Wars films, the characters say that the third movie in a trilogy is usually the worst, which is definitely the case here.

Why it is ranked here: One thing that the movie doesn’t do well is maintain continuity. All of the characters who star in the three movies of  trilogy haven’t aged a day, even though it has been 21 years in the movie universe. But James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender are supposed to turn into Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen in 17 years. Also, the character Angel, who was also featured in X-Men: The Last Stand, was played by an actor who is 25 years old. This makes it strange that he was played by a 26 year old actor in a movie that takes place in 2006.

In addition, Magneto doesn’t really seem to receive consequences for his actions as much as he should. In the movie universe, this is the third time in the last 20 years that Magneto has nearly started WWIII, yet the only time he was in prison was for a crime he didn’t commit. In the end of this movie, he quietly slips back into society without anyone noticing once again.

Henry Cavill as Superman and Ben Affleck as Batman in Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (Warner Bros).

Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice, Ultimate Edition

What it was about: This movie is about the growing tensions between heroes Batman and Superman. But while they are fighting with each other, a bigger threat is plotting the demise of both heroes.

Overall review: Since it was the Ultimate Edition, it doesn’t have reviews on Rotten Tomatoes. The original movie had a 27% rating for the critics and a 64% rating from the fans. The general consensus has been that the Ultimate Edition is much better than the original.

Why it is ranked here: The Ultimate Edition included some vital details that the original cut left out. For example, the original cut of the film had Superman framed for a shooting that took place in Africa. In the Ultimate Edition, the bodies in the shooting were burned after being shot, which made it look like Superman used his heat vision.

Chris Evans as Captain America in Captain America: Civil War (Marvel Studios).

Captain America: Civil War

What it was about: After a mission of the Avengers’ results in several civilian deaths, the government proposes the Sokovia Accords, which limits the use of the Avengers in battle. The Avengers are divided regarding whether or not the Accords should be put in place, which distracts them from a greater threat: Helmut Zemo.

Overall Review: Unlike the previous movies on the list, the critics and fans both gave this movie good reviews. The critics gave it a 90% rating and the fans gave it an 89%. The movie received the greatest reviews by the critics of any movie in the franchise.

Why it is ranked here: This was the first time that all of the Avengers have been seen in combat during a non-Avengers movie. Spider-Man made his Marvel Cinematic debut, and his performance received mostly positive reviews. Ant-Man and Iron Man gave the movie comedic relief. The post credits scenes foreshadowed the Black Panther and Spider-Man movies.

Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange in Doctor Strange (Marvel Studios).

Doctor Strange

What it is about: This movie focuses on arrogant surgeon Stephen Strange, who suffers from severe nerve damage after crashing his Lamborghini. When he thinks his life is ruined, he finds the Ancient One, called the Sorcerer Supreme, who teaches him how to use the Mystic Arts.

Overall Review: Dr. Strange received a 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Doctor Strange also received a 90% rating from the fans. This is the fifth Marvel Cinematic Universe movie to receive a 90% critics rating.

Why it is ranked here: This movie dared to be different from all other Marvel movies, and it paid off. The film introduced a mystical element into the universe, as well as the concept of other dimensions. Strange has a nice story for the main character, as he learns to care about others more than himself. Scenes like the interaction between Strange and one of his mentors added humor to the film.

Ryan Reynolds as Deadpool in Deadpool (FOX).

Deadpool

What it is about: After Wade Wilson is diagnosed with cancer, he volunteers for experiments to save his life. But after he gets the ability to heal, he sets out to kill the man who ruined his life: Ajax.

Overall review: Deadpool received an 84% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is one of the highest ratings in the X-Men franchise. It also had a 90% rating from the fans on Rotten Tomatoes. It was the first superhero movie to come out this year which gave it a number 1 spot in the yearly box office for three weeks.

Why it is ranked here: Deadpool is the first comedic X-men movie to ever come out, which is exactly what the fans wanted. After the character Wade Wilson made his cinematic debut in 2009, the version of the character seen was very inaccurate to the comic books. Deadpool didn’t talk, he didn’t wear his iconic suit, he had several superpowers that he never had before, and his mouth was sewed shut. This resulted in fans being disappointed and wanting a movie about the comic book Deadpool.

This movie brings in comic aspects of Deadpool like his jokes, breaking the fourth wall, and characters such as Weasel and Blind Al.  It is also entirely different from the previous movies considering it had a small budget, R-rating,and the world wasn’t at stake in the movie. However the fans loved it, and it is now the most successful R-rated movie of all time.

While this year broke the record for most superhero movies, next year is expected to do it again. Next year’s superhero movies include: The Lego Batman Movie (February 10th), Logan (March 3rd), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (May 5th), Wonder Woman (June 2nd), Spider-Man: Homecoming (July 7th),  Thor: Ragnarok (November 3rd) and Justice League (November 17th).
