HHS Spanish Club Welcomes All

Spanish. Love it or hate it, it is a growing language in this diverse country.

Students of all different grades and ages walked into room F135 at Hershey High School. They were greeted with a polite “Hola,” from Señorita Fasnacht and proceeded to find a seat amongst their fellow Spanish-lovers. El Club De Español, or Spanish club, for all of those who don’t know the language, meets every first Thursday and third Tuesday of each month.

A few goals the club is trying to accomplish includes a symbolic monarch migration, brown bag lunch days, and a group project known as the Pulsera Project, a selling of “pulsera” bracelets to donate to charity in Nicaragua.

When questioned about her being worried if the club would get traction, Fasnacht simply answered, “Yes we were smaller to begin with, but with a lot of dedicated people have stuck by. I’m hoping instead of getting smaller, the trend will go the opposite way.”

The symbolic monarch migration was something Fasnacht made sure to touch on more than once. In her words, the program will include the creation of paper butterflies that contain inspirational messages. The butterflies will then be sent to a butterfly sanctuary in Mexico where school students visit, according to Fasnacht. The Mexican school students will then be sending paper butterflies to HHS.

Señorita Fasnacht was visibly excited to see the students enjoyment as they ate traditional spanish foods such as “sopapilla” and awed over the the monarch butterfly chrysalises.

When asked why she chose to advise this club, “I just think that this was such a great opportunity for me to get involved and volunteer while doing something that I love,” answered Fasnacht.
