“Fighting for equality of opportunity for everyone, not just the top 1%,” is an essential goal of the Democratic National Party.

On Friday, October 7 the Young Democrats Club held a class session offering education on the Democratic Party and their stances. The session was lead by social studies teacher Tim Bean and included two guest speakers. The first of the two, HHS Alumni Tom Brier, is now a 3rd year law student at Penn State University. The second is Hillary Clinton’s regional campaign manager Saniya Ahmed.

One of the Young Democrats leaders, HHS senior Eric Kreiger, began the session by explaining landmarks the Democratic party has made. In 1920, President Woodrow Wilson passed the 19th Amendment allowing women to vote. Then in 1935, President FDR signed the New Deal which gave elderly and unemployed people more opportunities with Social Security. And finally,  in 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed legislation ending major forms of discrimination against African Americans. Kreiger said,“On election day, people know who they’re voting for. We need to campaign and hand out brochures before then.

Ahmed, the final speaker, focused on why Clinton is the best candidate. She said Hillary is a strong supporter for women’s rights.

“I’ve followed her career for years. Not only is she the best candidate, but she has done so much for women,” Ahmed said. Additionally, she believes that if Donald Trump wins he will not be an effective leader. Ahmed said, “Donald Trump will reverse all of the progress Obama has made in the past eight years.” She finished by encouraging people to vote Democratic on the whole ticket, not just nationally.

Everyone is welcome to attend the next Young Democrats meeting which will be held on Tuesday October 11th before and after school in Mr. Bean’s room.
