Jason Bourne is back.
The fifth movie of the Bourne series is finally making an appearance. Bourne, played by actor Matt Damon, was an assassin for the CIA. However, when a mission goes wrong, he contracts amnesia, a mental illness that causes him to forget all his memories. Bourne then sets out on finding out who he is. The fifth movie will be released on July 29, 2016.
The new Bourne movie starts at the end of the third sequel and after Bourne falls from a rooftop into the East River in New York City. The fourth movie is not relevant in the major storyline and did not impact Jason Bourne directly. After no reports of Bourne’s death, the movie starts when he resurfaces. In the previous movies, Bourne would run into numerous problems such as assassins trying to kill him while he is finding out pieces of his past. Paul Greengrass is also back to directing the Bourne films after not directing “The Bourne Legacy.”
This fifth movie, however, is different from the rest. Instead of Bourne just discovering who he is, other events have occurred. These are ones that have affected real life. Director Paul Greengrass has added the financial downfall and the great recession. Along with those events, the movie references a major chapter in U.S. history: the Edward Snowden government information leaks.
These can be seen as early as Act One. According to slashfilm.com, the movie starts off with riot in Athens, Greece. Since the last Bourne movie, there has been an economic downfall and several riots in Athens in real life. As well as the first act’s action, the third act is said to have action with a car chase down a highway strip in Vegas.
Also, the movie reveals a new hack in which the movie is based on. In fact, in the trailer, a CIA operative states that the hack might be worse than Snowden.
Speaking to slashfilm.com, Damon said, “Without giving too much of it away, it’s Bourne through an austerity-riddled Europe and in a post-Snowden world. It seems like enough has changed, you know? There are all these kinds of arguments about spying and civil liberties and the nature of democracy.”
Additionally, joining Damon are actors Alicia Vikander, Vincent Cassel, Julia Stiles, Riz Ahmed, and Tommy Lee Jones.
Unlike the first three movies, this one has a much higher budget. Greengrass’s budget for the movie sits around 120 million dollars. According to Box Office Mojo, “Jason Bourne” has the second highest budget, with “The Bourne Legacy” having a budget of 125 million dollars Of the four previous films, “The Bourne Ultimatum” produced the most money of 440 million dollars. “The Bourne Supremacy” and “The Bourne Legacy” followed suit with each producing about 280 million dollars.”The Bourne Identity” came last with about 215 million dollars. Overall the movies grossed a total of 1.2 billion dollars. Along with grossing the most money, “The Bourne Ultimatum” is ranked #92 on the all time North American Box Office ranking.
The Bourne series is based off the book series “Bourne” by Robert Ludlum. Originally, Ludlum had just three novels “The Bourne Identity,” “The Bourne Supremacy,” and ”The Bourne Ultimatum.” However, in 2001, Ludlum passed away. Eric Van Lustbader filled in for Ludlum and wrote nine more Bourne books. Van Lustbaders new book, “The Bourne Enigma” plans to come out in July.
The film comes out on July 29, 2016.
