The laughs of the students could be heard all the way down the hallway.
On April 29th, Hershey High School hosted its first ever Community Day, and Sitcom Club was in charge of one of the sessions. Both upperclassmen and underclassmen gathered together to watch, discuss, and laugh at sitcoms for a 40 minute period.
Sitcom Club was founded by juniors, Maggie Lane and Max Dadswell, in October of 2015. “We kinda said that we should make the club as more of a joke, but once we started talking about it the more we decided it would actually be a really cool thing,” said Dadswell.
The first Community Day session started with Dadswell and Lane introducing the club and explaining what sitcoms are. A sitcom, or situational comedy, is a genre of comedy centered on characters in a similar environment.
Throughout the day, the club planned a wide variety of sitcoms to showcase to the students. Shows included modern hits like Fuller House, New Girl, and the Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, as well as shows that have already ended such as Parks and Recreations, The Office, and Seinfeld.
During the first session, the students settled down in their seats and watched the pilot of Fuller House, a spinoff the 90’s hit Full House. The show is centered around DJ Tanner-Fuller, a single mother, her three sons, and the family and friends that help her out.
The club also provided a range of concessions for the viewers: lemonade, cookies, and freshly popped popcorn.
Molly Reeves, a sophomore, who attended the session, explained she was pleasantly surprised by the how funny the show was. “This has inspired me to look more into the sitcom community,” said Reeves.
“We want to share our club with the community because it’s a really fun experience,” said Dadswell. After the session was over, Dadswell implored those who liked the sitcom to join Sitcom Club during their meeting on Mondays at 3.
Lane said that she wants more students at Hershey High School to participate in the club, and she hopes that Community Day will allow the students to learn just how entertaining sitcoms can be, as well as develop a new favorite show. Her favorite sitcom is Parks and Recreations, a “mockumentary” about local government in a small Indiana town.
“Everyone has a sitcom they can relate to,” said Lane.
