The Hershey Bears Hockey team recently broke the record for most teddy bears present in their annual Teddy Bear Toss sponsored by GIANT, a total of 102,343 teddy bears and other stuffed animals on Sunday, January 5.
The Teddy Bear Toss is an annual event where fans present at the game throw teddy bears onto the ice after the Bears score their first team goal. The stuffed animals are then sent to various local organizations and charities to promote volunteer efforts and humanitarian aid.
The Bears started this tradition in 2001 and have collected over half a million teddy bears. This tradition has seen significant growth as 20% of all teddy bears collected from this tradition came from this year’s event. The Hershey Bears have beaten their previous record of 74,599 teddy bears from last year.
The Hershey Bears beat the Providence Bruins with a final score of 5-1. The Hershey Bears are part of the American Hockey League and have won back-to-back Calder Cups in the past two seasons. The Bears hold the record for most Calder Cups in the American Hockey League history with thirteen.
