The Derry Township School Board met on November 4 to discuss a variety of topics, starting with a special recognition for Ryan Macphee and Chloe Maitrejean, the “Student of the Month” awardees. Both students spoke about their experiences and expressed gratitude for the honor, sharing personal insights about their time at Hershey.
There were no community comments or submissions from residents or taxpayers for this meeting.
The Board then turned to curriculum updates, revisiting proposed course additions and revisions that had undergone a 30-day review. A key addition is the new AP World History course, which aligns with updated academic progressions and provides another Advanced Placement option for students seeking rigorous coursework.
School safety was also on the agenda, with discussions about updates to tobacco terminology and security measures based on Act 33 regulations.
The student representatives shared that the elementary school students recently explored the pumpkin life cycle in a hands-on science and art project. They also painted pumpkins and described their creations, combining their creativity with learning.
Additionally, Dr. Stacy Winslow introduced the Hershey 3D Club as a new extracurricular activity, recognizing it under Policy 122, which governs extracurriculars. This club offers students opportunities to engage with 3D technology, likely including skills like 3D modeling, printing, and design.
