After experiencing a rough start of the season, the Hershey Girls Basketball team looks to improve as they head into 2024. The Trojans have a 0-7 record in the Mid-Penn Keystone Conference.
Earlier in the season, Hershey played against Palmyra on December 12, Milton Hershey on December 15, and Central Dauphin East on December 18, where Hershey fell short with a score of 42-64.
Hershey faced the 6A Division team Cedar Cliff High School on December 20. Initially, they gained a lead of 6-4 by the end of the first quarter. Throughout the game, Lauren Richards made two steals against Cedar Cliff. However, with a series of rebounds and free throws made by Cedar Cliff, the game became tight. Hershey eventually ended the game with a score of 19-40.
As a team mainly composed of underclassmen, the Hershey team has a lot of potential to improve their skills.
“The playing time they are getting now as a young team is going to be very beneficial for next year,” Hershey Athletic Director Michael Montedoro said.
On December 22, Hershey lost 29-49 against Lower Dauphin. However, they had a 30% field goal percentage while Lower Dauphin had 28%. Hershey also had a 19% three-pointer percentage in the game.
In their first game of 2024 on January 3, Hershey made three steals and 20 rebounds against Mechanicsburg which had 39. McKinley Ebert also had one block. In the end, Hershey lost 14-73.
Despite the losses, the Hershey team remains optimistic and perseveres by continuing to practice.
“They’re working very hard, they are continuing to play hard, and they are improving,” Montedoro said.
Hershey will soon face Palmyra again on January 12 at 7pm. Other games to look out for this next week include Lebanon on January 15 at 7:30pm, and another game against Cedar Cliff on January 19 at 7pm.
