Movie Review: Jurassic World: Dominion

The third and final movie of the Jurassic World trilogy had multiple factors contributing to the critical review I would give them.

When I first watched Jurassic World: Dominion in theaters about a month after it was released, I was slightly disappointed. There wasn’t as much action as in their predecessors, and the plot seemed to drag. There was a bunch of wasted potential.

First off, for folks like Claire Dearing and Owen Grady (Bryce Dallas Howard and Chris Pratt, respectively) wanting the audience to care about dinosaurs, the whole plot is essentially them being chased by the very creatures they want society to protect and care for.

The action was nothing special. It could have had more, but the focus was more on the storyline. It got predictable. Also, how often do they need Owen Grady to hold his hand out? Realistically, the whole “put your hand out” can only work with so many dinosaurs. Overall, the movie was good, but it definitely was not the best finale for the trilogy. It was fun to watch, but not something rewatchable.

On the other hand, it was great to see the original trio (Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neil) of Jurassic Park coming in to save the world one last time. Also, the shot of the T-Rex in that circular waterfall near the end before the final battle was a big shout to the logo, which I thought was a nice touch.

The ending was bittersweet for me. Rexy was perhaps my favorite dinosaur, and I rooted for her in the first Jurassic World movie. I was happy that I got to see her roaring in victory for the last time. Blue running off with Beta into the wilderness was also a teary movement for me. I grew up loving dinosaur movies like Jurassic Park and Jurassic World, so having it end with the message that humans and dinosaurs must co-exist could be a real-life lesson.

I rate this movie a solid 8.5/10.

This movie may have been released back in June, but if you ever find yourself wanting to watch Jurassic World: Dominion, check out Fandango’s website for showtimes.
