A guide to getting the most out of virtual learning

Molly Ziesenheim

Online learning is not always easy for students. Concentration, workload management, and studying habits are all struggles students may be facing. Here’s a list of tips to get the most out of online learning.

Get enough sleep

Getting enough sleep each night can help you learn faster and retain the information you are receiving. Sleep assists in optimal emotional control, decision making, and social interaction. The optimal amount of sleep for each person may vary, but generally research suggests 7-9 hours per night. If having trouble falling or staying asleep, limiting caffeine intake and setting a regular bedtime may be the solution.

Working on concentration

Figuring out ways to boost your concentration might help you out. One study suggests that doodling can help memory and concentration. Working in a proper environment can also help. Instead of learning in your bedroom where there are more distractions, try working at your kitchen table. Also, try setting your phone in a different room, so you won’t be as tempted to go on it.

Engage

Actively participating will help you to retain more information. Take notes on the main points being discussed. Ask and answer questions, complete all the assignments and labs, and participate in group activities. The more you actively participate, the more you’ll comprehend.

Time management

Having strong management skills is key to achieving study goals. To avoid waiting to do an assignment until the last minute, try chunking the assignment and makeing a to-do list to follow. Create a calendar system to take note of important due dates and deadlines. This will help you manage your workload accordingly.
