The Hershey Theatre announced on Tuesday, March 31, 2020 that the annual Apollo Awards have been cancelled.

The awards show posted the news on their Facebook page. The post also explained how they made this decision for the safety of the directors and the students. Included in the post they said that they would be offering refunds for those who purchased tickets.

However, Hershey families and students expressed the unfairness of the situation, as the nominees for the fall plays and playwrights should get to find out who won. The fall plays were performed before the outbreak of COVID-19, and the nominations were released in late January. 

Only two hours later, the Apollo Awards replied saying they would find an alternative. 

“This is an extraordinary time in our world; we apologize for not getting this right the first time. Stay tuned for more details in the coming days.”

As of now, no alternative award show has been announced.

The 2021 Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards are scheduled for May 23, 2021.
