Meek Mill was released from prison yesterday, April 24, after the Pennsylvania Supreme Court ordered an immediate release of the rapper.

Mill, born Robert Rihmeek Williams, was nearing his fifth month of his two to four year sentence, which he received in the fall of 2017 for violating probation.

“I’d like to thank God, my family, my friends, my attorneys, my team at Roc Nation…, The Pennsylvania Supreme Court and all my public advocates for their love, support and encouragement during this difficult time,” Mill said in an Instagram post. “While the past five months have been a nightmare, the prayers, visits, calls, letters and rallies have helped me stay positive.”

Mill was sentenced to two to four years in November after violating a gun and drug charge from 2008. Mill was arrested for being involved in a fight, then popping wheelies on a dirt bike. The controversial sentencing became a symbol for criminal justice reform, attracting the attention of celebrities like Kevin Hart, Colin Kaepernick, Joel Embiid, and PA Governor Tom Wolfe.

Mill reminded people of the need for criminal justice reform later in his Instagram post, saying, “To the Philadelphia District Attorney’s office, I’m grateful for your commitment to justice – not only for my case, but for others that have been wrongfully jailed due to police misconduct. Although I’m blessed to have the resources to fight this unjust situation, I understand that many people of color across the country don’t have that luxury and I plan to use my platform to shine a light on those issues.”

Mill was picked up by Philadelphia 76ers co-owner Michael Rubin Tuesday afternoon, immediately attending the Sixers’ playoff game to a standing ovation.
