Weekly Batch of Bach Episode 7: Sharks in the Water

Madi Held and Shanna Sweitzer

Every week, Madi Held and Shanna Sweitzer are giving you a weekly review of ABC’s The Bachelor.

Hosted by Chris Harrison, this show aires on Monday nights at 8 p.m. on ABC and is about a single man looking for a woman with whom he would like to spend the rest of his life. After extensive interviews and auditions, 30 women were picked to be on the show this season. In each episode, there are group dates and one-on-one dates where the bachelor gets to spend time with the contestants. At the end of every week, there is a rose ceremony where the bachelor narrows down his choices by giving roses to the girls he wants to stay another week. Those who do not receive a rose are then “sent home” from the show. This helps him to then focus on the girls that he thinks will be the best for him. At the end, the bachelor must decide between the two remaining girls which one he’d like to propose to. Many couples end up breaking off their engagement and splitting up, but there has also been a lot of successful couples that do get married and even have children. The show has become popular all throughout America, and on January 2, 2017, the 21st season started with Nick Viall as America’s Bachelor.

Continued from last week…

The girls were pretty shook up about Nick’s breakdown after sending three girls home last week. They’re worried about him and whether or not he’s going to completely bail. Chris Harrison joined Nick on the beach and talked him through everything he’s been going through. Harrison is known for being a kind of counselor on the show. Then Nick went to apologize to the girls about what happened the night before and he explained that he was so confident in his relationships with all six of the remaining girls. The rose ceremony was canceled and they all headed to Bimini, Bahamas.

This week’s dates were really important because next week there are hometown dates where Nick travels to where each of the girls grew up and meets their families. There is only one rose on the dates this week and it’s on the group date.

One-on-One Date 1

Shanna

Vanessa got her second one-on-one date this week. The two of them hopped on a yacht and went snorkeling, which looked extremely fun in the crystal clear waters of Bimini. They sat down for dinner on a boat dock surrounded by lights. Vanessa spilled and told Nick that she’s falling in love with him. He tried to reassure her that he’s on the same page without saying the “L word” (which he is not allowed to say). Because he didn’t say it back, Vanessa was left questioning how he really feels about her.

Group Date

Shanna

Corinne, Kristina, and Raven hopped on yet another yacht with Nick where they found out that they were going to be swimming with sharks. Raven and Corinne both seemed okay with it, but Kristina was pretty frightened when she got in the water. This prompted Nick to get out with her and comfort her which of course upset the other girls a bit.  After an awkward post-shark swim, they headed to a beach house where Raven won Nick over and got the highly coveted rose. The two of them left the girls and had some alone time together dancing to live music.

  One-on-One Date 2

Madi

Danielle was lucky enough to be one of the three one-on-one dates this week. She and Nick had a blast playing basketball with kids and biking around the town. However, when they sat down just to have a conversation, it seemed awkward and didn’t flow well. Then they had dinner and things started to get better as they got into a deeper conversation. Danielle talked about how she thinks she’s ready for the next step and opened up to him about her feelings She also asked to know how he feels in return. Nick, however, felt different. He realized he didn’t see a future with her and thought that it was best to call it off then and there. Although he felt really bad, he kept mentioning that he thought this was a decision he needed to make and that she is a good person. However, she responded quickly saying that his explanation was “not good enough” and she left as soon as she could after saying goodbye to the other girls.

Oh Corinne

Shanna

After Danielle was sent home, Corinne jumped at the chance of Nick being alone. She paid him a visit and tried to take their relationship to the next level but he kindly declined in regards to his respect for the rest of the women. Her plan backfired and Corinne was left embarrassed which was actually really funny. It’s entertaining to see her bold confidence get crushed by her own mistakes.

One-on-One Date 3

Madi

Rachel got the last one-on-one date. They started the date off with a meal and just a conversation about how it would be if Nick went to her hometown. The date was short and sweet. They had fun and Rachel left with a confident feeling for the rose ceremony.

Kristina

From what seemed out of NOWHERE, Nick decided to send Kristina home before the rose ceremony. He had already made up his mind and wanted to tell her right away. Nick told her that unfortunately, his relationships with the other girls were much deeper than theirs. While Kristina became bitter, Nick tried his best to explain that she deserves better than him. The two of them said goodbye to each other both with tears in their eyes. This put all of the girls on edge questioning their own safety. I guess we’ll see what happens next week!

New Bachelorette Announced!

In related news, it was announced on Jimmy Kimmel Live on February 13th that Rachel Lindsay will be the next bachelorette for season 13 of The Bachelorette. This one will go down in the record books because she is the first black bachelorette. Now this totally spoils the fact that Rachel doesn’t win Nick’s heart at the end of all of this. I’m sure they wanted to announce this earlier than usually due to the buzz it’s creating, even if it ends up spoiling some things.

Here’s the link to the big announcement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LTBYcPwRk1o

Current Standings

On Monday, February 13th, Jimmy Kimmel had the honor of announcing that Rachel Lindsay will be the next bachelorette. This is the show’s first black bachelorette. (ABC/Mitch Haaseth)
