As students grow older, their passions change.
For some Hershey High School student athletes their passion for sports fades. Some are quitting sports that they have played their entire high school careers. Passion, or the lack of it, has driven others away. Four athletes in particular have quit the sports that they have worked hard for.
Senior Sheyanne Gaston, ended her four year long volleyball career less than midway through the season.
“I didn’t have a future in volleyball,” said Gaston. The only reason Gaston played was to keep her busy and in shape for the basketball season.
“I was playing volleyball for fun, and it wasn’t fun anymore,” said Gaston.
Like Gaston, some athletes have grown out of their sports. The lack of fun in sports causes them to quit.
Junior, Grace Donahue was starting varsity soccer goalkeeper as a freshman and continued to start through her sophomore year. Donahue lead the team 17-5 in the 2014 season. This year however, Donahue has taken up cross country in the 2015 season instead of soccer,
“I love cross country because there are no positions,” said Donahue.
Soccer consists of eleven players with set spots for each player, whereas cross country just allows runners to run the course under a certain time.
“I really didn’t like my position, it just sucked,” said Donahue.
Along with Donahue, Cameron Quirin, a junior, also quit soccer. Quirin has not taken up another sport in place of soccer, nor is he planning on playing his senior year.
“I wasn’t getting any playing time,” said Quirin.
Quirin was playing JV as a junior and was not happy with where he was in his high school soccer career.
Junior Kathryn Kinney was another individual to quit soccer. However Kinney does still plays club soccer for Capital Area Premiere Academy (CASA).
“Since I still play club, I don’t miss high school soccer,” Kinney said.
Despite Kinney quitting soccer, she is still involved in some high school sports. Kinney has taken up tennis instead.
Like Donahue, Kinney also did not enjoy her position in soccer. As a center mid you must have good control and possession of the ball
In the end Gaston, Donahue, Quirin, and Kinney all had one thing in common their reason for quitting the sports they once loved is just the uninterest.
