The Hershey boys ice hockey team beat Lower Dauphin 6-3 for the Merriman-Weare Winter Classic cup for the fifth time on November 14, 2016 at Klick Lewis Arena.
The Hershey Trojans were lead by five different scorers. Three of the trojans scorers were juniors Sabatino Iannarello, Sammy Steele, and Patrick Larkin. Iannarello opened the scoring for the Trojans with two minutes left in the first period.
Coonelly scored the first Falcons goal two minutes into the second period. The play between both teams was even until Iannarello scored again with three minutes left in the second period. Paymer also scored a quick goal with two minutes left in the period to bring the score to 3-1.
The third period was full of scoring for both teams. The Trojans’ Freer scored not even a minute into the period to bring the score to 4-1. Helmer and Connelly scored two goals to get the Falcons within one goal. However, late goals by the Trojans’ Steele and Larkin put the game out of reach.
The final score was 6-3. The Merriman-Weare Winter Classic is to honor Robert Merriman and his wife Nancy Weare- Merriman. The winter classic also enriches the cross town rivalry between Hershey and Lower Dauphin.
