NEXUS Community Day
October 7, 2016
Spread the word!
That was the number one goal of the NEXUS group members when preparing for Community Day. The session allowed new people to learn about what NEXUS is. Presenter and co-president, Elizabeth Abraham, showed the audience of session one what NEXUS is all about.
According to Dietz, Hershey High School teacher and NEXUS representative, NEXUS is a Literary Magazine that shows the best of the school’s creative talents. It covers poetry, fiction writing, nonfiction writing, photography, drawings, and paintings. Anyone in Hershey High school can submit something for the magazine.
Dietz said, “I saw creative genius inside students.”
That’s why he likes being a part of NEXUS. He believes it gives people the opportunity to freely express themselves.
In session one, students had the choice of doing different creative activities. Students had the options of black out poetry, adult coloring, and free drawing or writing as well as some creative group activities. The three students that arrived to session one did free drawing and coloring.
Kat Dovat, Hershey High School sophomore, and Carlin Spinney, Hershey High School junior, had some time to talk while making pictures out of numbers. In their opinion, it is a fun way to communicate and meet new people.
Dovat said, “We were facebook friends, and we never talked to each other in person.”
They believe NEXUS and Community Day gave them time to learn more about each other.
While they were deep into their conversation, Zoe Waschbusch, Hershey High School freshman, was adult coloring. Waschbusch really enjoyed the NEXUS session and even asked Abraham if she could borrow the crayons NEXUS had in order to finish the coloring page.
The three students left the session with smiles on their faces.
Despite the small turnout for NEXUS, they are still making efforts toward making NEXUS bigger and better. NEXUS now has an instagram to promote themselves.
Dietz said,“We are not quite there yet. We’ve got little embers, but we are not as strong as we could be.”
