On February 10th, McDonalds welcomed back its seasonal Shamrock shake as well as the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry. The two treats will be available through March 23rd, so the question is, what do you order?
The classic shamrock shake is a mint/vanilla flavored milkshake which is topped with a swirl of whipped cream and a single cherry. The shake has been a Saint Patrick’s Day staple and McDonalds favorite since it was first introduced in 1967.
The Oreo Shamrock McFlurry which was later introduced in 2020 to celebrate the Shamrock Shake’s 50th anniversary, is a vanilla soft serve blended with mint syrup and Oreo pieces. The treat is around four dollars (prices vary by store) and is served in mini or regular sizes.
As a McFlurry enthusiast, I was excited to try the Oreo Shamrock McFlurry, but my initial impression was already off to a bad start. At first glance, I thought the dessert was melting, but I then realized it was the excessive layer of shamrock syrup that layered the top of the treat. My first spoonful was entirely syrup.
My second spoonful only had vanilla and Oreo. I ended up spending more time mixing the McFlurry together than I did eating it. I also noticed that as I got to the bottom of the McFlurry there were almost no Oreos left but still a pool of syrup.
If you’re planning on a trip to McDonalds, my advice is to skip the Orea Shamrock McFlurry and instead pick up the classic Shamrock shake. Both will only be available until March 23rd.
