Hershey High School’s Academic Decathlon competed last weekend at the Regionals Competition at Methacton High School for the chance to compete at States. Unfortunately, the team was unable to acquire the necessary points to advance to the State Competition, but they still managed to perform at an exceptional level.
Five members of Hershey High School’s team were awarded medals, placing in the top of specific categories including Math, Literature, and Music.
Junior Gwen Cysyk led the team with medals, acquiring five among ten events. Cysyk was also the only participant to win a gold medal from Hershey, placing first in Music. Cysyk additionally acquired silver medals in Literature, Social Science, and Essay, and a bronze medal in the Interview event. Cysyk also accomplished all of these awards as an alternate for the team.
Additionally, HHS students, Kailey Whipple, Eva Rabago, Olivia Ding, and Victoria Kerschenheiter added seven other medals for the team. Whipple, Rabago, and Cysyk won their medals in the Honors Division, sitting with GPAs of 3.8 and above. Whipple won a silver medal in Music, and Rabago won a bronze medal in Speech. Ding was part of the Scholastic Division with a GPA between 3.2 to 3.8. Olivia Ding won a silver medal in Science and bronze medals in the Social Science and Essay events, while Kerschenheiter, who participated in the Varsity Division with GPAs below a 3.2, won two bronzes in Science and Math.
Although the team failed to advance to the next round, the accomplishments of the team are still outstanding and something for the team to be proud of.
