Donald Trump has won the 2024 presidential election, becoming the first U.S. president since Grover Cleveland to serve non-consecutive terms. At 78, Trump will also be the oldest individual elected to the presidency.
His victory over Vice President Kamala Harris, who sought to be the nation’s first female president, underscored a shift in several key battleground states, including Pennsylvania.
Trump’s performance in Pennsylvania proved crucial to his path to victory. His campaign saw gains in suburban Philadelphia counties, such as Bucks and Chester, where he improved his 2020 margins. Additionally, he secured support in traditionally Democratic areas, including Northampton County and parts of Erie, a city Biden had narrowly won in 2020.
According to the Associated Press, Trump’s lead in Pennsylvania stood at approximately 175,000 votes when the race was called early Wednesday morning. Analysts point to these gains as a turning point that contributed to his electoral vote count surpassing the 270 needed to win.
