Did you know that over 1.3 million young drivers were involved in police-reported traffic crashes in 2021? (Market Watch)
Many sophomores at Hershey High School will be eligible to get their driver’s licenses throughout the year. Despite being eligible for a license, they still pose safety concerns as they are new drivers.
Sophomores should practice their driving and parking skills before their junior year. Therefore, sophomores shouldn’t be considered for student parking passes.
Additionally, sophomore parking will cause a world of trouble for the students currently parking on campus. There are around 270 sophomores in HHS—combining them with about 600 juniors and seniors is a recipe for disaster. Already, juniors and seniors must “fight” to claim a spot.
Vehicle costs rise each year. For students with part-time jobs, purchasing a vehicle is both economically and mentally demanding. Juniors and seniors should not have to worry that a new driver could damage their car while they are in class or at an internship.
Although sophomores should not be allowed parking privileges in the main lot, Pebble Beach may be a suitable alternative. Once juniors and seniors have “claimed” their spots in the main lot, sophomore drivers may be offered spots at Pebble Beach.
As you can see, the no-sophomore parking passes rule is very important for ensuring a safe environment in the campus parking lot. If you are an underclassman who struggles driving, be sure to adequately practice driving somewhere more forgiving than the school’s student parking lot.
