On July 15th, National Clean Beauty Day will be celebrated by people nationwide. The creation of this day was meant to encourage beauty companies to move in the right direction ethically. It includes everything from how a product is made, to complete customer transparency.
As a society, many are unaware of how toxic our everyday beauty products can be. According to The New York Times, researchers have linked several chemicals in hair dyes and straighteners to breast and uterine cancers and have also traced fragrances in shampoo and soaps to fertility issues.
Surprisingly, the US has not passed laws or regulations on personal care products since 1938, meaning that over 80,000 chemicals have been introduced in beauty products.
Being exposed to even the smallest amount of these chemicals can be life-altering. According to the National Library of Medicine, phthalates—a chemical linked to birth defects, sperm count, and altered pregnancy outcomes—are incorporated into many products, yet it is not noted on labels most of the time.
Not knowing the dangers of your favorite products is unnerving, which is why the brand Juice Beauty founded this National Day in 2020.
The Founder of Juice Beauty—Karen Behnke—has been interested in wellness from a young age. It stemmed from her battle with a rare blood disorder that she developed in her childhood.
When she became pregnant, she found that it was difficult to find healthy, clean, and pregnancy-safe products on the market. Ultimately it led to the creation of Juice Beauty in 2005.
Behnke was determined to bring change to the beauty industry. For five years, she worked with chemists to create the ultimate clean beauty products. Their plant-based ingredients were groundbreaking in the industry. ELLE, Cosmo, and Forbes all named Juice Beauty the ‘OG’ in this movement.
According to Juice Beauty, Karen Behnke said, “Our farm brings Juice Beauty’s organic ingredients to life and allows us to more closely connect with our antioxidant-rich ingredients. The stunning 20-acre vineyard and olive grove serve as inspiration for future innovation and provide ingredients for our products.”
However, their focus isn’t just set on ingredients, but also how they manufacture. They’ve set a goal to eliminate the use of virgin plastic and convert all their plastic bottles to recycled plastic.
Without Juice Beauty’s pioneering in the beauty industry, we wouldn’t be where we are today. But it doesn’t stop there. Other brands like MERIT, Ilia Beauty, Saie, and Kosas Cosmetics began hopping on the bandwagon.
Supporting these various clean beauty companies is pushing society in the right direction—not only ethically, but also morally. With National Clean Beauty Day approaching, let this be an awareness and inspiration to find cleaner and healthier ways to treat ourselves and our environment.
