On Thursday, March 14th, Taylor Swift released her record-breaking Eras Tour concert film streaming on Disney+. This film includes the full concert as well as 6 acoustic “surprise” songs.
The film, officially titled “Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version),” was originally released in theaters only on October 13th, 2023, before it was available to be rented starting December 13th of the same year, and now streaming on Disney+.
The streaming variant of this movie is the only version to include the songs “Cardigan,” “I Can See You,” “Maroon,” “You Are In Love,” and “Death by a Thousand Cuts.” This is in addition to “The Archer,” “Long Live,” and “Wildest Dreams,” which were all added to the film upon its release to renting platforms.
This movie has already broken numerous records, including AMC’s highest single-day ticket sales and highest-grossing concert movie of all time, passing over $250 million in gross sales. This is in addition to the records the Eras Tour shows have broken, like becoming the first tour to gross over $1 billion.
Filmed over the course of three nights at SoFi stadium in Los Angeles, the Eras Tour movie makes it feel as though you’re watching the concert from the comfort of your couch. Swift’s vocals are clear and sharp, with the tuned-down crowd singing as backup. The camera work is exquisite, with a clear focus on Swift, along with the occasional crowd shot.
The only critique I have with the movie is the formatting of the additional “surprise” songs. Rather than being dropped into the film where they occur on the setlist like was done with “Cardigan” and the other setlist songs, they are all added at the end of the movie to be watched after the original concert concludes in a special segment titled the “Acoustic Session.” This portion of the movie is not only after “Karma,” the final song in the show, but after all of the end credits as well.
The remainder of the film, however, is perfectly executed. The transitions between “eras” are short and entertaining, with fun effects appearing on the screen, keeping viewers entertained even while Swift is not on stage.
“Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour (Taylor’s Version)” can officially be added to Swift’s movie collection, which features other titles such as “Folklore: The Long Pond Studio Session” and “Miss Americana.”
