Many students explore their interests during school, be it through electives, clubs, or sports. Student journalism is an excellent way for teens to connect with their community and explore another possible passion. In the past, students all over the nation have done some impressive projects.
In 2020, two high school students at DuPoint Manual High School, Satchel Walton and Cooper Walton, reported on their local police training slideshow- specifically the choice the Kentucky State Police made to quote Hitler thrice during a training presentation. While the police later responded noting that the presentation was not used since 2013, this article drew lots of attention with even the state governor responding to this story.
In 2020, Tatyana Tandanpolie, a student at New York University, reported on the use of racially traumatic media in classrooms and the need for professors to acknowledge how harmful this imagery can be to their Black students.
Aditya Singhvi at Harker High School reported on the statistics of COVID in 2020. She gathered data and graphics from multiple sources, and her article contains many interactive infographics.
The Native News is a student-run newspaper at the University of Montana. Every year, students in the university travel to their state’s Native American populations and report detailed stories on a single topic.
