The Oscars are one of the biggest nights in Hollywood. Everyone from movie enthusiasts to fashionistas wait for this award ceremony every year not just to see our favorite actors and movies win awards, but to see the looks celebrities pull out. 

Since 1961 the red carpet has not been red, but the color of champagne. This doesn’t stop celebrities from delivering glamorous “red carpet” looks. And in this article we will take a look at some of the very best and some of the worst.

We primarily focused on the women’s looks this evening. Women are more harshly judged on what they wear and have higher expectations placed on them than men. Our ratings are based solely on the look on the night and not each artist’s skill in acting.

Starting strong, supermodel and actress Delevingne wore a beautiful one-shoulder, thigh-high slit, vibrant red gown by Elie Saab. The style reminded me of old Hollywood in more ways than one and was definitely at the top of the list of Best dressed.

Florence Pugh

Pugh turned heads in this beautiful Oscar look. She was wearing a pair of shorts with a gown top by Valentino, paired with Tiffany jewelry, and black platform heels. If anyone could make shorts work at the Oscars, it’s this actress. Even Though this look was very controversial, I loved it and it was one of the best looks. 

Angela Bassett

There is no shock over the fact that Angela Bassett turned heads with this look. The actress swore a vibrant, deep purple Moschino gown with a Bvlgari snake-shaped necklace. The dress is a mix of old Hollywood but with a touch of 80’s vibrancy and flare. 

Fan Bingbing

The Chinese actor changed the expectation of American fashion on the “red” carpet. She stunned in a Charleston-style gown by Tony Ward Couture that had a sweetheart neckline, a siren silhouette, and dramatic bright green sleeves. Overall the dress, finger-waved hair, and bright red lips screamed old Hollywood. She will be going down in history books.

The Actor and activist partnered with RCGD Global and proved that sustainability is beautiful on and off the “red” carpet. She appeared in a simple, ivory fabric with poet sleeves. In addition, she paired the stunning dress with a custom-made Kate Spade clutch and Jimmy Choo heels. The look will always be timeless and is another wonderful addition to the Old Hollywood-inspired dresses.

Top 5 worst dressed 

Elizabeth Banks

Banks wore a black and white Vivenne Westwood gown. There was a bow in the back that turned into a cape. Overall I believe  that the dress looked very messy and not something that someone should wear to the Oscars.

 The athlete and executive producer wore a neon yellow and pink gown by Kolchagov Barba, and paired it with matching pink heels. I was very confused why she wore this dress to the Oscars because it seemed fitting for the Barbie movie premier.

The actor wore a black, one-shoulder Armani Privé dress with a thigh-high slit and glittery gray roses on her shoulders and hip. Overall people who watched the Oscars loved this dress and it was seen on many best-dressed lists. However, there were just too many sparkles on it and it looked almost like a prom dress.

Mindy Kaling

 Kaling wore an all-white custom Vera Wang gown. It had unattached bell sleeves and a corset. The simplicity and sleekness of the dress were very nice, however, it looked like something I could buy on FashionNova or Shein. 

Salma Hayek

The actor and her daughter shared a special time when the duo stepped out in Gucci gowns. Salma wore an orange and red sequin gown and her daughter wore one of her archived dresses. However, the sequin gown looked like something out of a prom magazine.

This was the first year they reintroduced the 8 categories that they previously removed. The eight removed were film editing, sound, makeup/hairstyling, original score, production design, documentary short, animated short, and live-action short. I can’t wait to see what outfits celebrities pull out next year.
