National Say Something Nice Day
June 1, 2021
“You have a wonderful smile.”
“You did good today.”
“I love your outfit!”
These compliments are just some simple phrases that could make someone’s day.
June 1, 2021, marks the day of “National Say Something Nice Day.” With everything going on this year, it is only fitting that this day can heal some rifts within society by just doing the bare minimum: being kind. A simple compliment could let someone know that you care and that you notice them.
On June 31, 2011, the president and CEO of the Charlston, South Carolina Speech and Hearing Center, Mitchell Carnell, published a book called, “Say Something Nice: Be a Lifter!” The book is about how you can lift people up with kind words, rather tear them down with negativity. Since coming from a background of knowing the effects of positive words and communication, Carnell has written two other similar books: “Speaking in Church Made Simple” and “Random Acts of Kindness.”
Before the publication of “Say Something Nice: Be a Lifter!” in 2006, Carnel’s other works in communication was recognized by North Charlston’s mayor who proclaimed June 1 as Say Something Nice Day in recognition of Carnell’s efforts.
They say actions speak louder than words, but on this day, sometimes words can be just as powerful as actions. On June 1, we should take the opportunity to say something nice to one another and acknowledge others in order to make them feel recognized. The world needs more kindness. It can be as simple as complimenting someone’s artwork, writing, and effort in sports or school.
