As we arrive in October and Halloween approaches, horror movies become more popular and sought out. And while there are plenty of scary movie masterpieces out there, Netflix manages to present their audience with plenty of truly awful options. To avoid having to sort through the good and the bad, these are the top horror movies Netflix has to offer. 

1. Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Following an FBI trainee seeking help from an asylum-bound cannibal to catch a serial killer, Silence of the Lambs is a classic that draws its viewers in with it’s creepy atmosphere and uncomfortable plot points. Anthony Hopkins’ unsettling portrayal of Hannibal Lector is truly captivating, and the movie does a great job of making such an awful character so intriguing. Silence of the Lambs does just about everything right and makes it arguably the best horror movie on Netflix right now.

1. Zodiac (2007)

Based on real events, Jake Gyllenhaal plays a political cartoonist for the newspaper most heavily involved with the attacks of the Zodiac Killer. The movie takes us through the investigations and suspicions as Gyllenhaal’s character becomes obsessed with figuring out the killer’s true identity. With amazing cinematography and suspense, Zodiac will keep the viewer’s attention on the screen. And although the movie has a run time of almost three hours, it doesn’t feel like it’s dragging. Rather it gives viewers a feeling of how long the actual investigation ran out for, and you can feel the characters grow desperate in search for answers. Although it’s more thriller than horror, Zodiac is one of the best movies all around on Netflix, and definitely worth the watch. 

1. The Evil Dead (1981)

Providing Netflix with a classic zombie movie, The Evil Dead follows a group of teens spending time at a remote cabin, where evil forces slowly turn them into zombies. Made on a shoestring $90,000 budget, The Evil Dead spawned multiple sequels over the years.  Although some scenes are controversial, and old horror movie cliches occur, Evil Dead as a whole holds up well and is a perfect scary movie to throw on during a dark spooky night.

1. Creep (2014) and Creep 2 (2017)

While it may be cheating to pick two movies for this spot, the Creep movies go perfect together and are perfect for viewers who are looking for an unsettling and, well, creepy movie. Both movies follow videographers responding to ads that lead them to an unusual and unsettling client. It’s hard to go into further detail without spoiling either movie, but the events that take place are unpredictable and was a pleasant surprise upon first viewing. Creep 2 does better than you would consider a horror sequel to do with continuing the story and keeping you interested, and makes a strong case for being better than the first. 

1. Hush (2016)

Hush does something truly interesting for a horror movie; they remove one of the viewer’s senses. The movie follows a deaf writer who has found solidarity in the woods only to be faced with fighting off a masked killer. While the movie does provide sound, there are several scenes where the audio cuts so the viewers can experience the situation through the protagonists point of view. By removing the viewer’s hearing, it provides a certain terror that is achieved without flashy jump scares and loud noises. The levels of suspense and creepiness that Hush is able to provide to viewers makes it a must watch during this Halloween season.
