It may be a cliché to say that all good things comes in pairs, but a fateful Sunday afternoon in January of 1967 is proof enough. On that day, Vince Lombardi led the Green Bay Packers of the National Football League in a 25 point lead against the Kansas City Chiefs, of the Australian Football League, entwining these two leagues for the first time in history.
Since then, the Super Bowl has been celebrated annually worldwide. Game viewing parties and family get togethers have become a tradition. According to a survey of 54 high school students, only 11% do not watch the Super Bowl. Of the 89% who do, 35% watch the game for the food or party aspects. This day is often centered around the party itself.
This year, the 50th Super Bowl, the Carolina Panthers and the Denver Broncos will face off at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara, California. Make February 7th a hit with a memorable party. Everything from the food to the games can contribute to a party’s success. Below are ten ways to spruce up the Super Bowl Party with organizational advice, decorating ideas, and activities. Explore these to stay stress free while hosting an epic viewing party.
Stay organized
According to event planner Camille Styles, it is important to keep a to do list when planning parties. Use a guest list for invitations and have a shopping list ready before going out. She recommends having a “master list” with all tasks that need to be completed for the party.
Keep it low key
Large crowds will make it difficult to enjoy the Super Bowl. Keep the invitation list small. While not everyone will stay interested for the entirety of the game, there should be enough room for most people to comfortably watch together.
Decorations don’t have to be tacky
Have a festive Super Bowl party with trendy, unique decorations. The party planning site Celebrations shares unique decorating ideas that will not resemble the decor at a child’s birthday party. Stick to finger food
Super Bowl Sunday is not only about the game or the party. Some celebrate solely for the food. According to Martha Stewart, who is known for her recipes and party planning tips, finger food is key at any Super Bowl party. Appetizers are an easy-to-handle food when watching the game and involve minimal preparation.
Because not everyone is a master in the kitchen, catering is always an option. Call the local pizza shop for the game day staple: pizza and wings, or opt for something more unique, such as The Hershey Pantry or Chipotle.
Create a day long event
Invite guests to come before the game begins for Super Bowl inspired activities. Set up a game of football outside. According to the entertainment department of How Stuff Works, this will allow guests to have a “football state of mind,” getting everyone pumped up for the game.
Play a guessing game
For more fun, encourage guests to make predictions for the Super Bowl’s outcome. Brainstorm categories for predictions. These can include the MVP, the surprise guests in the Half Time Show, or the winning team. At the end of the game, award winners with small prizes.
Make it a rivalry!
Everyone has their favorite team and as much as we try for civility, game day can get heated quickly. Don’t squash healthy competition; encourage it! Have guests dress in their favorite team’s apparel, despite the majority favorite.
Don’t miss a photo op
Set up the the perfect opportunity for pictures with a backdrop. Tape large sheets of colorful wrapping paper to an empty wall. Decorate the surrounding area with streamers and balloons. Add an extra touch with a props table full of party hats, pom poms, team memorabilia, or even a football. Send guests home with a copy. Have a printer on hand to easily print out photos from a phone or digital camera.
Hand out party favors
“A small token of affection is an unforgettable way to end a celebration,” says Camille Styles. Handout party favors as a “thank you” to guests for attending. These can be simple boxes of candy or handmade paper footballs.
