Sigmund Freud, father of psychology, put it best, “I cannot think of any need in childhood as strong as the need for a father’s protection.”
Father’s day is a national holiday celebrated by those all over the world who wish to give thanks to all the father figures in their life. The actual date of Father’s day falls on a different day every year; this year Father’s Day is Sunday, June 19, 2016.
Some choose to celebrate with a barbecue and picnic while others go fishing or out to brunch to show thanks to their father figures. Many buy gifts and find the perfect cards to show appreciation on this special day.
For Hershey High School math teacher, Amy Wolfe, her kids serve her husband breakfast in bed and create homemade crafts every year.
“Despite the coffee stain on the mattress from spilling it a few years ago on Father’s Day, the tradition remains,” said Wolfe.
Along with trying to help her kids create the perfect Father’s Day for their dad, Wolfe also has to come up with something to do with her own dad. “My own dad usually joins us for supper and dessert,” said Wolfe.
Wolfe says that she also spends part of the day with her father-in-law since he is also very important to her. “We go to church and out to brunch with my father in law on Father’s Day morning,” said Wolfe.
“The day cannot go by without seeing all the Dads in our lives and makes it possible to be with all of them in one whirlwind of a wonderful day,” said Wolfe.
On the other hand, HHS sophomore, Kieran Holley and her father, used to always go fishing or to a car races at the speedway which would be followed by a meal on Father’s Day.
“My dad loved to cook so he would let me pick out the meal and we would try to make it,” said Holley.
Last year, Holley recalls that she and her dad tried to make reuben sandwiches and she thinks it was the best she had ever had.
For Holley, memories like these are very important to her due to the passing of her father in January 2016.
“It’s gonna be weird celebrating without my dad this year,” said Holley.
With this being said, Holley said that the best way to celebrate Father’s Day is by making memories since there will be a time when that’s all you have left to cherish.
“Definitely be thankful for the dad that you have because you never realize how much you miss them until they are gone,” said Holley.
In the end, Wolfe said Father’s Day is important because it’s a day that we can set aside to honor all the dads in our lives.
“It’s a day when we can take care of him,” Wolfe said, “In the same way that he cares for us all the other days of the year.”
