The movies and TV shows below are not all that has been added, but it is rather my personal selections of the best additions to the month of March.
Groundhog Day is a 1993 film that stars Bill Murray. The film was written and directed by Harold Ramis. Groundhog Day follows the story of Phil Connors (Murray), who is a cocky and arrogant weather man. When Connors is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, to cover the annual Groundhog Day event, he ends up in a time loop that repeats the same day over and over again. Plenty of comedic shenanigans ensue as Connors tries to figure out how to escape.
Groundhog Day features a classic performance from Murray as well as some of Ramis’ best writing. Classic gags, like the montage of suicides that Murray performs to try to escape the time loop set the comedic tone for the film. Overall, Groundhog Day is a classic comedy that can be enjoyed by all different comedic style tastes. Groundhog Day started streaming on Netflix March 1, 2016.
Scarface is a 1983 crime movie that stars Al Pacino. The film is directed by Brian De Palma and written by Oliver Stone. The movie follows the story of Tony Montana (Pacino), a Cuban immigrant who begins his takeover of the drug cartel. His rise to power leaves a trail of destruction and carnage. Pacino gives a great performance as Montana. Stone’s script is filled with endlessly quotable lines that Pacino delivers with tons of enthusiasm. Scarface is often included in the pantheon of gangster movies alongside classics like Goodfellas and The Godfather.
Scarface has the pace of an action movie that has just chugged three Red Bulls. The movie barely leaves the viewer any room to breathe, but it’s what makes this movie its own unique beast. Scarface does not have as good of a story or character dialogue as The Godfather or Goodfellas, but it’s always as entertaining, if not more so. Scarface is a high octane action crime movie that has an outstanding performance by Pacino and some great bloody and brutal shootouts that make it worth the watch. Scarface also became available to stream on Netflix March 1, 2016.
Daredevil was the first show to come from the partnership between Netflix and Marvel studios. The first season of the Netflix original series was a huge hit with critics and fans alike. The show starred Charlie Cox as Matt Murdock, a lawyer who was blinded at a young age in an automobile accident. Although he became blind, his senses became super sensitive, and with training he was able to “see” with his other senses. Murdock uses his heightened senses to become Daredevil, a street level vigilante.
The first season followed his origin story and his fight with fellow co star Kingpin, played by Vincent D’Onofrio. Fans of the first season have plenty to be excited for thanks to Netflix’s infamously bingeable shows. Season two of Daredevil will be available on March 18, 2016. The second season of Daredevil will add new characters like anti-hero, the Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal, and the love interest, Elektra Natchios, played by newcomer Elodie Yung.
From wacky comedies to heart pounding action, these are new must-watch movies and shows coming to the streaming giant. So get out there, and start bingeing. We’ll see you next month with a new batch of Netflix gold.
