Super Bowl 51: Patriots Defeat Falcons 34-28 in Overtime

The New England Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons 34-28 in Super Bowl 51 to capture their fifth NFL championship.

Game MVP Tom Brady put on a stunning performance, contributing 466 yards and two touchdowns. Brady set a record for most passing yards in a Super Bowl. The game pitted the rock solid fundamentals of Patriots coach Bill Belichick and Tom Brady against the explosive pass and catch duo of Matt Ryan and Julio Jones.

Scoring started early in the second quarter with a short rushing touchdown by Falcons running back Devonta Freeman. The score grew to 21-0 at halftime following an interception returned 82 yards for a touchdown by Falcons cornerback Robert Alford.

New England managed a massive comeback, scoring 25 unanswered points in the second half. The score was drawn 28-28 going into the first overtime in Super Bowl history. The previous record for largest comeback was a measly 10 points.

New England won the coin toss and Brady took the field, looking to mount the largest comeback in Super Bowl history. Brady successfully travelled 73 yards down the field, and running back James White punched in a two yard run to seal the game.

The two teams dominated their respective conferences, with the Falcons clinching the NFC with an 11-5 record while scoring a league-high 33.8 points per game. The Patriots, on the other hand, won the AFC by allowing a league low 15.6 points per game and accumulating a 12-4 record. The two teams both blew out their opponents in the playoffs, outscoring their opponents by a combined 19 points per game.

The halftime show featured a performance from Lady Gaga.
